a.      SAN Infrastructure
A*CRC manages two redundant SAN fabrics in Biopolis and Fusionopolis and one SAN fabric at the DR site located at NCS.  There is a total of more than 1,500 FC ports.  The two redundant SAN fabrics in Biopolis are spanning across multiple buildings, namely Matrix, Genome, Proteos, Nanos, Immunos and Helios.  We are running the Brocade DCX as the core backbone for these SAN fabrics.  Biopolis is adopting a Core-Edge Architecture because of the geographically distributed nature of the SAN access and Fusionopolis is adopting a Collapsed-Core Architecture because all SAN access are within the Data Centre.

b.      SAN and NAS Arrays
A*CRC has SAN and NAS Arrays from multiple vendors, namely EMC, Fujitsu, HDS, HP, IBM, Netapp, Oracle,  and SGI.  The total storage capacity is about 4PB raw or about 3PB usable.  We are running a mixture of SSD, FC, SAS and SATA disks.

c.       SAN Infra and Storage Resource Management
A*CRC has deployed Symantec Command Central Storage as the centralized SAN Infra and Storage Resource Management software to manage and provide a complete view of the majority of our resources.

Databases

A*CRC runs a centralized highly available Oracle RAC Database system for the users within ASTAR.  There is also a cold standby Oracle database server at our DR site.  Other common databases such as MySQL, MSSQL and PostgreSQL are also supported.

Data Protection

a.      Backup Infrastructure
A*CRC has one centralized backup system each at Biopolis and Fusionopolis.  It is running the Networker backup software from EMC, with tape libraries from IBM, Oracle, Overland and Quantum.  For all A*CRC tape libraries, the total aggregated slot count is more than 2,000 slots.  We have VTL from EMC, Overland and Quantum.  The usable aggregated capacity for A*CRC managed VTLs is more than 300TB.  For the deduplication capable VTLs, we are getting a data reduction ratio of more than 35 times.  Total backed up data on these VTL are in excess of 5PB.

b.      Data Protection Management
A*CRC has deployed EMC Data Protection Advisor to manage the backup systems at both Biopolis and Fusionopolis to provide us with a holistic view of these backup systems.  The Data Protection Advisor will also help us in troubleshooting our backup environments.

c.       Virtual Infrastructure Backup
A*CRC is also running the Commvault Backup System that is dedicated to backup our Virtual Infrastructure.

Virtual Infrastructure

A*CRC has a highly available Virtual Infrastructure at Biopolis, Fusionopolis and DR sites that is based on VMware vSphere technology.  This is tightly integrated with our SAN and Backup Infrastructure to provide users with a hassle free way of tapping onto A*CRC resources.  For even higher availability, all resources within the Virtual Infrastructure in Biopolis can be replicated to Fusionopolis and vice versa.  Resources at both Biopolis and Fusionopolis are also replicated to our DR site for easy disaster recovery purposes.  Most of the developmental database servers and testing servers are running on this virtual infrastructure.  Lots of critical systems are also running on these Virtual Infrastructures.  vCloud Director and vCloud Connector are deployed to link up the vSphere platform at Biopolis and Fusionopolis.

VDI based on VMware View is used to provide an alternative virtual mobile platform.

Archiving

A*CRC has deployed on a small scale a centralized archiving facility based on the Arkivios system. We are looking at a more suitable system that we can deploy on a much larger scale.
A*CRC have also developed a software in-house called ASAP (A*CRC Storage Analyzer and Profiler) to analyze and profile file system. This will help the centre to decide on the archiving strategy. The ASAP software can be made available to users on request. You can see some sample storage analysis and profiling results here.

Security

A*CRC has a centralized SAN security system based on the Decru Datafort system in Biopolis. This will give users the option to encrypt the data where necessary.
